Technical Solutions Team Tour of British Steel
BlogPPETextiles10.06.2019On a very wet day in May the Technical Solutions Sales & Service Team arrived at British Steel in Scunthorpe for a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the site.
Our guides for the day, Terry and Eddie, both retired British Steel employees, were very knowledgeable and passionate about the site and its heritage.
We had the chance to see the steel making process from start to finish including a visit to Concast (continuous casting) where liquid steel is poured into a casting machine from a giant ladle to make slabs and blooms. At the Rail and Section Mill we saw how steel is transformed into lengths of train track with each length being tested by state of the art equipment to ensure it is fit for purpose. British Steel currently supply around 90% of the country’s rail track with each piece being individually identified to show the date of manufacture.
At the Rod Mill we saw high performance wire rod being manufactured, this is used for a large number of applications to include automotive tyre cord and shopping trolleys.
With 100 miles of road and 70 miles of train track I never cease to be amazed at the sheer scale of this 2000 acre site and how important it is to Scunthorpe with regards to employment and also to the country as a whole for the supply of steel for our rail and construction industries.
